ABOUT THE SCHEME
The Story Behind Bonitas
Bonitas Medical Fund was founded in 1982, originally established to serve black civil servants during the apartheid era — a demographic that was largely excluded from existing medical schemes at the time. It has since grown into the second largest open medical scheme in South Africa, covering approximately 359,000 principal members and 700,000 lives. It has been administered by Medscheme since its founding, though from 2026 administration transfers to Momentum Health Solutions.

HISTORY
Growth Through Mergers
Bonitas has grown significantly through a series of scheme mergers over the past decade, each bringing new membership and scale:
-
2012 — Merger with Pro-Sono Medical Scheme
-
2017 — Merger with Liberty Medical Scheme
-
2022 — Merger with Nedgroup Medical Scheme
This non-organic growth strategy has made Bonitas one of the most consolidated schemes in the open market. Its consistent expansion through mergers reflects both its financial stability and its positioning as an attractive destination for smaller schemes looking for a home.
ADMINISTRATOR CHANGE
What the Momentum Transition Means
From 2026, Momentum Health Solutions replaces Medscheme as the administrator of Bonitas. This is a significant change after over 40 years of continuous administration by Medscheme. For members, the practical implication is that the back-end systems, processes and member-facing administration they have dealt with will transition to a new platform and team.
Administrator transitions of this scale can carry short-term disruption risk — things like claims processing timelines, member portal access and query handling can be affected during the changeover period. Members should monitor communications from Bonitas carefully during 2026 and ensure their contact details are up to date with the scheme.
MEMBERSHIP PROFILE
A Young Scheme
One of Bonitas's most noteworthy characteristics is the age profile of its membership. With an average member age of 35.9, Bonitas has one of the youngest membership bases of any major open scheme in South Africa. A younger membership profile generally means lower average healthcare utilisation, which contributes to the scheme's financial sustainability. It also means the scheme carries a healthier long-term risk profile compared to schemes with ageing memberships.
WELLNESS
Bonitas Value and Wellbeing Programme
Bonitas offers a wellness and value programme to its members that includes gym discounts and access to a range of lifestyle and health programmes. While not as extensively integrated as Discovery's Vitality or Momentum's Multiply, it provides members with practical benefits aimed at encouraging healthier living.
