ABOUT THE SCHEME
The Story Behind Momentum Health
Momentum Health's origins trace back to a scheme called Pulz Medical Scheme, administered by Sovereign Health. In 2004 Momentum Group announced a merger between Pulz and National Medical Plan (also administered by Sovereign Health), effective 1 January 2005 — and Momentum Health Medical Scheme was born. The scheme continued growing through acquisition, absorbing African Life Health in 2005 and merging with Ingwe Health in 2010. A proposed merger with BP Medical Aid Scheme in 2019 was blocked by regulators.

HISTORY
A Major Shift in 2026
From 2026 Momentum Health Solutions takes over as administrator of Bonitas Medical Fund. This makes Momentum one of the most significant medical scheme administrators in South Africa, covering 3.3 million lives across its administered schemes. The move also reflects a broader industry consolidation trend as smaller administrators struggle to compete with the scale of Discovery Health.
VITALITY'S TWIN
The Multiply Programme
Momentum's Multiply wellness programme is the closest competitor to Discovery's Vitality — and for good reason. It was Momentum that originally administered the auxiliary products for Discovery Health and helped build what became Vitality in 1997. When the two organisations parted ways, Momentum developed Multiply as its own wellness and rewards offering. The key difference today is that Discovery's Vitality integrates across life, medical, investments and short-term insurance in a single ecosystem.
